Triamcinolone (Inhalation)

September 23rd 2006 23:19
Triamcinolone (Inhalation) :
Triamcinolone, an inhalation corticosteroid, is a cortisonelike medicine used to help prevent the symptoms of asthma. When used regularly every day, triamcinolone decreases the number and severity of asthma attacks.

However, triamcinolone will not relieve an asthma attack that has already started. It works by preventing certain cells in the lungs and breathing passages from releasing substances that cause asthma symptoms.

Treatment :
Triamcinolone should be packaged with an instruction sheet. Read the directions carefully before using this medication.

You may wish to consult your doctor or pharmacist about the proper administration of triamcinolone.

Shake the container well just before each use to evenly distribute the ingredients and equalize the doses, as the contents tend to settle on the bottom of the bottle. If more
than one inhalation is necessary, wait at least one full minute between doses to receive the full benefit of the first dose.

Take triamcinolone exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Do not use more of it and do not use it more often than recommended by your doctor. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

While using triamcinolone, try to develop a set schedule for taking it. If you miss a dose and remember within a few hours, take the missed dose and use any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. Do not double the next dose.

Triamcinolone does not cure asthma, but it will help to control the condition as long as you continue to take it. It may be several weeks before you notice the full effect of triamcinolone.

Side Effects :
Minor: Cough, dry mouth, hoarseness or other voice changes, sore throat, or unpleasant taste in the mouth. These side effects should diminish or disappear as your body adjusts to triamcinolone.

Chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or a piece of hard candy to relieve mouth or throat dryness.

To prevent dryness and irritation of the mouth and throat and to prevent possible infection of the mouth, rinse or gargle with water after each dose. DO NOT SWALLOW the water after rinsing.

Major: Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about behavior changes; creamy white, curdlike patches in the mouth or throat; depression; difficulty breathing; nervousness; pain or burning in the chest; pain when eating or swallowing; restlessness; tightness in the chest; or wheezing.

Interactions :
Triamcinolone should not interact with other medications when used according to directions.

Before starting to take triamcinolone, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are taking.

Warnings :
Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to any cortisonelike medications, especially to triamcinolone.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you have ever had bone disease of any sort (including osteoporosis), diabetes mellitus, emotional instability, glaucoma, fungal infections, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, myasthenia gravis, ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcers, kidney disease, liver disease, or tuberculosis.

Before having surgery or other medical or dental treatment, tell your doctor or dentist you are taking triamcinolone. Depending on how long you have been taking this medication, you may need to receive higher doses if you are under stress, such as from a serious infection, injury, or surgery. Discuss this with your doctor or dentist.

Avoid contact of the aerosol inhalation with your eyes.

Do not puncture, break, or burn the aerosol container. The contents are under pressure and may explode. In addition, avoid exposure of triamcinolone to cold or freezing temperatures; this medication may be less effective if it is cold when you use it.

Do not stop taking triamcinolone without first checking with your doctor. Your doctor may want to gradually reduce the amount of medicine you are taking before completely stopping it. Make sure that you have enough medicine on hand to last through vacations, holidays, and weekends.

Do not take any over-the-counter (nonprescription) medications for weight control or for asthma, sinus, cough, cold, or allergy problems unless you first check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Your doctor may want you to carry a medical identification card stating that you are using triamcinolone and that you may need additional medicine during times of emergency, stress, severe asthma attack, or other illness.

If you are using a bronchodilator (albuterol, metaproterenol, etc.) by inhalation, you must use the bronchodilator several minutes BEFORE this medication (corticosteroid inhaler). Discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.

Notify your doctor immediately if you are exposed to any person with chicken pox or the measles.

Triamcinolone is for preventative therapy only. DO NOT use it to treat an acute asthmatic attack. This medication should be used at regularly scheduled intervals throughout the day as prescribed by your doctor, even if you are not having any symptoms of asthma.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Triamcinolone has been shown to cause birth defects in the offspring of animals that received large doses of it during pregnancy. Adequate studies have not been done in humans. Also tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant. Small amounts of triamcinolone pass into breast milk and may cause growth suppression or a decrease in natural corticosteroid production in the nursing infant.
