Terazosin

September 24th 2006 03:56
Terazosin :
Terazosin is used to treat high blood pressure. It relaxes the muscle tissue of the blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure.

Terazosin is also used to reduce urinary obstruction and relieve the symptoms associated with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The drug can effectively relieve the hesitancy, dribbling of urine, and sensation of incomplete bladder emptying often associated with BPH.

Treatment :
The first dose of terazosin may cause fainting, especially in the elderly. Your doctor will gradually increase your dose to avoid this adverse effect.

If you miss a dose of terazosin, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, do not take
the missed dose at all; just wait until the next scheduled
dose. Do not double the next dose.

Terazosin does not cure high blood pressure or BPH, but it
will help to control the condition as long as you continue to
take it. In order to become accustomed to taking terazosin,
try to take it at the same time(s) each day.

A minimum of four to six weeks may be needed to see a response from terazosin for the treatment of BPH.

Side Effects :
Minor: Cold symptoms, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fluid retention, frequent urination, headache, itching, lack of energy, malaise, nasal congestion, nausea, nervousness, rash, sweating, or weight gain. These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to terazosin.

To prevent constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

If terazosin makes you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while, get up slowly from a sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.

To avoid dizziness or light-headedness when you stand, contract and relax the muscles of your legs for a few moments before rising. Do this by pushing one foot against the floor while raising the other foot slightly, alternating feet so that you are "pumping" your legs.

Major: Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about blurred vision, chest pain, difficulty breathing, difficulty urinating, fever, flulike symptoms, heart-rate disturbance, impotence, nose bleeds, palpitations, persistent malaise or fatigue, postural effects (dizziness, light-headedness, vertigo leading to reductions in blood pressure or fainting), ringing in the ears, or swelling.

Interactions :
Terazosin has been known to interact with certain other types of medications:

The combination of terazosin and alcohol or verapamil can lead to a severe drop in blood pressure and fainting.

The severity and duration of the blood-pressure-lowering effects of the initial dose of terazosin may be enhanced by a beta blocker.

To avoid drug interactions, do not take any over-the-counter (nonprescription) medications for weight control or for asthma, sinus problems, cough, cold, or allergy problems unless you first check with your doctor or pharmacist.
BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently taking, especially any of the medications listed above.

Warnings :
Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to any medications, especially to terazosin, prazosin, or doxazosin.

Before starting to take terazosin, be sure to tell your doctor if you now have or ever had angina (chest pain), kidney disease, or liver disease.

Because initial therapy with this drug may cause dizziness or fainting, your doctor will probably start you on a low dosage and increase the dosage gradually.

If terazosin makes you dizzy or drowsy or blurs your vision, do not take part in any activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous tools or machinery.

To avoid dizziness or fainting while taking this drug, try not to stand for long periods of time, avoid drinking excess amounts of alcohol, and try not to get overheated (avoid exercising strenuously in hot weather and taking hot baths, showers, or saunas).

Before taking any over-the-counter (nonprescription) sinus, allergy, asthma, cough, cold, or diet preparations, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Some of these products can cause an increase in blood pressure.

Terazosin is only indicated for hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This agent is not for symptoms or conditions that appear to be similar to BPH, such as cancer of the prostate.

Do not stop taking terazosin unless you first check with your doctor. If you stop taking this drug, you may experience a rise in blood pressure. Your doctor may want to decrease your dose gradually.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Although terazosin appears to be safe, there have been only limited studies in pregnant women. Also be sure to tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant; terazosin should be used with caution in nursing women.
