Orlistat :
Orlistat is used as part of an overall treatment plan for weight loss. Successful weight-loss programs require diet modification and exercise. Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of fat from the gastrointestinal tract.
Treatment :
This medication can be taken with a full glass of water. The dose should be taken either with each meal that contains fat or within one hour of such a meal. If you skip a meal or eat a meal with no fat, you may omit your orlistat dose.
If you miss a dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next scheduled dose with your next meal. Do not double the next dose.
Side Effects :
Minor: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatty stools, fecal incontinence, gas with discharge, oily spotting, rectal pain, or urgency to defecate. These side effects may diminish or disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
Major: Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO NOTIFY YOUR DOCTOR about severe abdominal pain or severe diarrhea.
Interactions :
Orlistat may interact with several medications:
Orlistat may reduce the effectiveness of fat-soluble vitamins. Take vitamin supplements at least two hours before or after a dose of orlistat.
Orlistat may reduce the effectiveness of cyclosporine. Take your dose of cyclosporine at least two hours before or after your dose of orlistat.
Orlistat may alter the effect of warfarin (a blood thinner). The effect of warfarin should be monitored carefully while you are taking orlistat.
Orlistat may increase the absorption of pravastatin, increasing its effects.
Before starting orlistat, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medication you are taking, especially any of those listed above.
Warnings :
Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to any medications, especially to orlistat.
Before starting to take orlistat, tell your doctor if you now have or ever had gallbladder problems, chronic malabsorption, kidney stones, or an eating disorder.
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Orlistat should not be used during pregnancy. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant. It is not known if orlistat passes into breast milk.
