Leflunomide :
Leflunomide is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It works by slowing the growth of rapidly proliferating cells. Leflunomide also has anti-inflammatory effects.
Treratment :
Take it with a full glass of water, with or without meals.
Try not to miss any doses of leflunomide. If you do miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose at all. Just return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the next dose.
Side Effects :
Minor: Diarrhea, dizziness, hair loss, headache, nausea, vomiting, or weight loss. These side effects should diminish or disappear as your body adjusts to leflunomide.
If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while, get up slowly from a sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
Major: Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO NOTIFY YOUR DOCTOR about difficulty swallowing, facial swelling, increased blood pressure, itching, shortness of breath, or skin rash.
Interactions :
Leflunomide can interact with other medications:
Charcoal and cholestyramine can decrease the effectiveness of leflunomide.
Rifampin may increase the blood levels of leflunomide, which can increase the risk of leflunomide side effects.
When leflunomide is combined with drugs that can cause liver damage, there is a risk of increased leflunomide side effects.
Before starting leflunomide, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medication you are taking, especially any of those listed above.
Warnings :
Tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions you have had to any medications, especially to leflunomide.
Before starting to take leflunomide, tell your doctor if you now have or ever had high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease, or cancer.
If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not participate in any activities that require mental alertness, such as driving an automobile or operating potentially dangerous machinery or equipment.
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Leflunomide can harm the fetus. Women of childbearing age should use an effective form of birth control while taking this drug. Women should take a pregnancy test before starting leflunomide. If the test is negative, the medication can be started. If you suspect you may be pregnant while taking this medication, contact your physician immediately. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant. Leflunomide may potentially cause harm to a breast-feeding infant, and it should not be taken by nursing women.
