Doxazosin

Doxazosin :
Doxazosin mesylate is used to treat high blood pressure. It relaxes the muscle tissue of the blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure. Doxazosin is also used to reduce urinary obstruction and relieve associated symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).
Treatment :
Doxazosin may be taken before or after meals, as directed by your doctor.
The first dose of this medication may cause very low blood pressure, especially in the elderly, when treatment is first started. This effect is particularly strong in some people two to six hours after the first dose.
Doxazosin does not cure high blood pressure or benign prostatic hypertrophy, but it will help to control the condition as long as you continue to take it. In order to become accustomed to taking this medication, try to take it at the same time(s) each day.
Side Effects :
Minor: Breast pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, edema, frequent urination, headache, itching, lack of energy, malaise, nasal congestion, nausea, nervousness, rash, sweating, or weight gain. These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if skin reactions or other side effects persist or become bothersome.
Major: Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about blurred vision; chest pain; difficulty breathing; difficulty urinating; dizziness or light-headedness (severe or persistent); edema; fainting; fever; flulike symptoms; heart rate disturbance; nosebleeds; palpitations; persistent malaise/fatigue; persistent, painful erection; or ringing in the ears.
Interactions :
Doxazosin has been known to interact with other types of medications:
The combination of doxazosin and alcohol or verapamil can bring about a severe drop in blood pressure and cause fainting.
The antihypertensive effects of clonidine may be reduced during therapy with doxazosin.
Warnings :
Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to any medications, especially to doxazosin, prazosin, or terazosin.
Before starting to take doxazosin, be sure to tell your doctor if you now have or ever had angina (chest pain) or any kind of kidney disease or liver disease.
Because initial therapy with this drug may cause dizziness or fainting, your doctor will probably start you on a low dosage and increase the dosage gradually.
